Our Approach to Sustainability

Pulse Hotels & Resorts is committed to responsible tourism and sustainable island operations across the Maldives. Our approach focuses on reducing environmental impact, supporting local communities, and preserving the natural ecosystems that define each destination. Through a combination of energy efficiency, waste reduction, marine conservation, and community engagement, we aim to create long-term value for our guests, our people, and the environments in which we operate.

Sustainability is integrated into every aspect of our operations, from how our islands are built and powered to how we source, manage resources, and engage with local culture. Guided by continuous improvement, we work to align our practices with globally recognised standards while ensuring that each property contributes meaningfully to its surrounding community and environment.

Clean Energy and Responsible Operations

Across our islands, energy efficiency and resource-conscious operations are embedded into daily practices. At The Nautilus Maldives, 704 solar panels generate approximately 430,000 kWh of clean energy annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Energy-saving lighting, low-impact materials, and the removal of single-use plastics are integrated across operations. These efforts are supported by ongoing monitoring and improvements to ensure long-term efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Coral Restoration and Marine Conservation

Protecting marine ecosystems is a shared priority across the portfolio. Coral restoration programmes at Kandima Maldives, Nova Maldives, and The Nautilus invite guests to actively participate in reef regeneration through coral planting and adoption initiatives. These efforts are supported by marine biologists and include the development of coral nurseries to strengthen reef resilience. In South Ari Atoll, Nova also promotes responsible interactions with whale sharks and manta rays through educational sessions and guided experiences.

Sustainable Design and Island Integration

Sustainability is reflected in the way each island is built and maintained. Natural materials, reclaimed wood, and locally crafted furnishings are prioritised to reduce environmental impact while supporting local artisans. The Nautilus also features the Indian Ocean’s largest green wall, with over 20,000 plants providing natural cooling, privacy, and ecological value. Across properties, design choices are guided by a commitment to preserving the natural landscape and enhancing biodiversity.

Responsible Water and Waste Management

Waste reduction and recycling initiatives are implemented across all islands. At Kandima, organic waste such as coconut husks and garden materials is repurposed into mulch to enrich soil and reduce water consumption. The elimination of single-use plastics, responsible sourcing, and eco-friendly cleaning products further support efforts to minimise environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency.

Culture, Art, and Heritage Preservation

Celebrating Maldivian culture is an integral part of the guest experience. Kandima and Nova support the local creative community through the KULA Art Initiative, providing a platform for artists and cultural exchange, while Nova’s Holhuashi offers a dedicated space where guests can gather, connect, and experience the spirit of Maldivian traditions. At The Nautilus, guests can discover local heritage through curated island visits and cultural performances such as boduberu. Across all properties, these experiences foster a deeper connection to the destination while supporting cultural preservation.

Local Sourcing and Sustainable Dining

Sourcing locally is a key focus, supporting both sustainability and community livelihoods. Kandima’s Fresh Labs promotes a farm-to-table approach using locally grown produce, reducing reliance on imports while ensuring freshness and quality. Across the islands, partnerships with local suppliers and farmers contribute to a more sustainable supply chain and strengthen local economies.

Wellness, Education, and Guest Participation

Sustainability is designed to be accessible and engaging for guests. From coral planting and marine education sessions to wellness programmes focused on natural and organic practices, guests are invited to take part in meaningful experiences. These initiatives create awareness while offering opportunities to contribute directly to environmental and community-focused efforts.
